Class of 2011

Are you new to rodbuilding or thinking about getting started, we want to hear from you!

Canadian Cane is dedicated to introducing the craft of bamboo rodmaking to aspiring rodmakers, please contact us and let us help you get started.

Updated June 17, 2011

Canadian Cane is a rodmakers Gathering held bi-annually in Fergus, Ontario, Canada. The next gathering will be held on May 25-26, 2013 at Bellwood Lake Conservation Area.

A rodbuilders gathering is an informal conclave where builders, aspiring builders and enthusiast non-builders meet and share ideas and techniques. For non-builders join us and gain insight on the  building of a bamboo rod. Canadian Cane started in the mid 1990's and is the only bamboo rodmakers meeting held in Eastern Canada. For those living in Western Canada the Corbett Lake Gathering is held on the "even" years and was the first gathering started in Canada.

We will be focusing on having a lot of "hands-on" on demos and small group interaction, learn about nodeless or quad construction, see the unique tools. Learn about making reel seats, demystify the cane rod process with an introduction segment for beginners or non-builders. You don't have to be a builder to enjoy Canadian Cane! Have a look at the "How it's Made" Youtube link at the bottom of this page.

We have added an open presentation format that allows participants close up viewing on over a dozen aspects of rod building.

"Hi James, Carl, and Jorge,

Thank you so much for a wonderful cane gathering. You hit exactly the right tone by emphasizing hands-on presentations and activities. That, and the super-friendly organizers and staff and the great collection of participants made for an unforgettable experience. Not only did I learn something new every few minutes, but I met and made new friends during the whole two days. "

"Carl, James and Jorge:

Just want to drop a note saying that I made it home safe and sound in less than 3 ½ hrs….  Also want to thank you again for all you have done for yet another great Canadian Cane – it’s second to none. I have learned lots of tricks and made new friends this year.

I am thankful to be one of the few lucky rod making bastards able to attend this year and for the years to come."

JC, Michigan 2011

"Wow, how many Canadian Cane gatherings have I missed out on?  No matter whether one is a builder or a collector or a cane fisher or even remotely close to this fantastic past time, there is enough in the two days to light anyone's fire.  I am not certain if it was the chance to try so many rods or listen to the chatter or presentations or just the general comradelier of all those that attended.  Just maybe, whomever organizes this weekend, should be applauded for doing a fantastic job.  I hope it wasn't just one person."

Great job guys, I really enjoyed myself and you can bet I'll sign up for the next one.

BV, Ontario 2011
